The Personal Business Model Canvas

The Business Model Canvas is an analytical tool described in Business Model Generation. It is a visual template preformatted with the nine blocks of a business model, allowing users to diagram existing business models or conceive new ones.

In the BMY Forum, we're adapting the Canvas for use by individuals — keeping the same nine building blocks, and considering the individual a one-person enterprise with a "personal business model."

We're looking at how individual talents, skills, experience, personality, and aspirations fit into each of the building blocks, and how we can use the building blocks — and the complete Canvas — to inform career-related action.

Please honor the terms of the Creative Commons license under which we all use the Business Model Canvas by being sure to include the URL BusinessModelGeneration.com on all versions of Canvas. Please include the URL BusinessModelYou.com on all personal versions of Canvas.

Here's the most recent version of the Personal Business Model Canvas:

Here's a place to show and share personal business models.

  • I think we're all waiting for the iPad app :-)

Like Marieke, I favor an "analog" version for use at home. For me, the computer interface is uninspiring as a tool for thinking/reflection, especially in my "off" hours (or "semi-off" hours :-)
  • @Marieke True...  I keep waiting for them to release the app.

Or give me a beta invite to help test  (hint hint)

But yes I agree.. the more tangible and dynamic the tool is... the easier it should be for people to not only engage initially, but use it as a constant reference guide as they progress & develop their plan.

I hope they will have sufficient case studies to help ppl understand clearly how to build their own. without hesitation... (not thinking of anyone in particular - myself)

  • @Emmanuel Great! There is a BMGen Ipad app under development actualy, which is great already. This idea can enforce the other. An app is very functional on the road, but  at home or in the office I would just like to look at it and play with it on a more spontanious level. Thought I should share it :) because if it's a good idea, the creation should almost evolve automatically in a community like this :)
  • I love it...  i thought about the same thing last night...but wondered if it being so dynamic was a good thing?  I peronsally like to see how things evolve over time...so I think i felt a pad with the templates would have been better for that purpose.

But if we believe people will use this often to drive their progress, remind them of their priorities and actions... then a whiteboard sounds like it would make sense.

  • I love this idea, Marieke! Wonder if we have any product specialists in the house?? Will mention in the broadcast mail for Sunday --
  • Meaning...What if the book came with merchandising, actual tools you can feel and play with that will make your vision tangible and present everyday?
  • I was thinking...As I was getting started on my own business model canvas yesterday, I would love to have a big notice board, maybe a whiteboard on which a BMY canvas is printed out. I imagined that if I would have that it would be a constant playtool in my study. Something to look at, touch and play with and would keep my vision alive or give me the possibility to tweak it whenever I feel things need to be changed. I would love to have a set with magnetic postits to come with that. Re-writable post-its i imagined. A board like that would be a great present as well. :)
  • Yes, here's the new place. I need to turn off comments on this page -- I'll save them off-line for reposting later.

  • Is there a simple way for people to upload their own 'personal business model canvas'? I plan to sketch mine over the weekend and if I have a chance will coach my (adult) kids on this as well. It would also be able to have a catalog of how different people's sketches evolve across iterations.
  • You put down the family in the canvas as partners... I put them in a canvas as costumers, like my employer, friends, etc.

What is the added value from me to them? What do I add to my employer, family, friends, etc.

Partners are the ones I need to deliver my added value... so in a manly way: I need the florist (partner) to express my love (added value) to my wife (costumer).

If you use it this way, you can also add the community and/or other services you want to add value to.
